Kim said… Bed rest vs. Crutches non weight baring is basically the same thing. A) it's hard getting around on crutches, your foot will be tender, you will have pain pills that make you a little light headed. The more you are up and moving, the more likely you are going to bump your foot. Being in bed with ice and having it elevated is the way to go. Trust me, going to the bathroom on the crutches was torture enough.
I can tell you, knowing what I know.....I have NO IDEA how anyone could do both feet at the same time. It is very hard to get around on one foot. I have PF in both feet and I begged her to do both.....she wouldn't consider it. she said she usually waits 3 months at the earliest. If I had done both at the same time, it would have been very uncomfortable.....we are talking bed pans....b/c honestly, there is no way I could have gone to the bathroom with two feet in the condition my other foot is in.....maybe a bed side toilet.....but still......that's just my opinion.
After reading what he described to you...it's pretty close to what my doctor told me. I'm just giving everyone blow by blow.....as it happens. Because we tend to "remember" things differently. I figured if I wrote as it happens, everyone is getting exactly the details...and will be better prepared. I really think that 40% of the surgery is being mentally prepared. Because even though two weeks in bed doesn't sound to bad, you'd be surprised. You get nuts and bored. I went off on my husband last weekend, for really no reason....just the frustration.
You and only you know when you should do this surgery. It should be when you reach the point that you are miserable because you have tried everything to fix them and it keeps cycling back.......F
Kim said… That's basically what I had......but when he says "crutches" for 14 days....my doctor said bed rest and crutches to go to bathroom. Followed by three weeks of walking boot. I will be off the crutches in a couple of days. I am giving blow by blow details for people so that they have all the information to ask good questions to their doctors. You will also find that the more you read, there is a great difference in the way the doctors approach the healing process. There was one gal on here who was walking barefoot three days after surgery and used crutches for a week.
My doctor thinks that the first two weeks are very important, that is why she said bedrest. That's why educating yourself, talking and asking good questions is the key to resloving this problem.
