I believe I have PF, but have not been to a doctor. I am an avid runner and am wondering how long I would have to stop running for PF to get better. Are there any other runners out there that took time off to let it heal, and if so, what kind of exercise did you do in the meantime?

I can walk normally now. when I first got it -- no. it was really painful especially in the morning.
Before getting out of bed each day I ALWAYS heat the calf and then the foot with a heating pad, then gently stretch. That helps.
I went through a lot of kinds of PT including laser, taping, Graston technique, had a boot, none of that worked for me. Like I said though, I've continued to cycle and swim (but stopped the swim - the 'pointing' position of the foot really aggravated the PF).
I'm hoping the acupuncture helps. It's the best of anything so far. I am at firstname.lastname@example.org feel free to email any time. I know how mentally and emotionally difficult this is!!!!
Thats interesting as I have a TENS unit and have used it at various times on my back.Whereabouts on your foot did you place the electrodes?My unit has 4 electrodes.
My pain specialist wrapped the unit around my foot to receive electrical stimuli at the arch and heel area. I am pain free and I still stretch and wear my orthos and good walking shoes to make sure the pain does not come back. I am really happy now and I power walk 2 miles a day but I am scared to run but thats just me being careful.
FOR ANYONE WITH PF........I have been thru it all......supports, splints, exercises, ice, rest, you name it....nothing worked......I mean this condition changed my life and I was miserable and in pain all the time. I ran into a friend of mine I had not seen in years and he told me about his PF......told me to run (albeit carefully) to an orthopedic surgeon and get a shot in my heels (major ouch) of cortisone mixed with an anti-inflammatory.......I got up from the shots (which were extremely painful) and have not had one pain since as he has not either in 7 years!!!!!!......it is a miracle to a nightmare I had been dealing with for over a year......I baby them and wear arch supported shoes because I am paranoid that it will return.....I HAVE NO PAIN AT ALL......RUN TO AN ORTHO. DOCTOR AND FORGET THE PODIATRISTS UNLESS THEY CAN GIVE YOU THESE SHOTS....my orth doctor said when you have heel spurs like mine no amount of any of the other methods is going to work....demand an xray for sure so you can see your arch or spurs...he also said that since swelling is decreased with the shot of anti=inflammatory as well as the cortisone, the spurs will heal too.....you can have up to 3 of these shots per year if needed.....my friend had his ONE shot 7 YEARS AGO AND HIS PAIN HAS NOT RETURNED.....if you do not get results and a shot from one doctor, do as I did and go to another until you get the shots......if you were as desperate as me, you will be amazed....could work for you.....I hope it does! This is my mission in life si to tell people that the shot might work for them . :>
Tony - how long did you have PF? Have you tried Newtons? Someone rec'd those to run in.
I would caution anyone about cortisone shots - they make the plantar weaker. I had 3 and they did nothing for me. Acupuncture has been the only thing that has helped (I still have it just not as bad).
I've had foot and ankle pain since 1992, due to a broken right ankle. I think my favoring my right ankle contributed to the heel spur on my left foot. I think the spur caused the PF over the last 3-4 years, It just kept getting worse until I had to seek medical help about 1 uear ago.
I haven't tried Newtons but have tried most everything else, from New Balance, Reebok, Red Wing, Rockport, Clarks, Aerosole, and others that don't come to mind. I wear only Thorlos Socks, the thick, basketball models. I've tried insoles and orthodics. I've used night splint/sock, ankle brace, heat, cold, everything 2 different doctors prescribed except for the therapist. Who has time for that?
Then I found the Adidas PowerBounce Ambition 2.0 running shoe in October, 2010. It feels better than the custom-fit orthodic on the foot and is very lightweight.
Within 2 weeks of wearing that shoe everyday, the pain is gone, completely. If I don't wear those shoes (I now have 3 pairs) on the weekend, by Monday I am feeling the pain again.
If you haven't tired the Adidas, you owe it to your foot. Wear them every day for 2 weeks and let me know if I'm right or wrong.
I am a runner as well, and have been dealing with the same issue. I run long distances, and go to the gym every day to supplement my running. I have not been diagnosised with PF, but am pretty positive that's what it is. the longest I have taken off is a week, and it has not gotten any better. I have had these symptoms for almost 2 years now. I changed my running shoes to Asics, and for a short time (days) that had helped-not to much though. I have also tried ice, compression, braces( the kind you buy at CVS or Walmart), stretching exercises before I run- I put my foot against a wall with toes pointing upwards, and gently lean into the wall), but I still have the pain as soon as I stop running and am off my feet for a short period of time. I haven't been to the doctor either, because I am afraid of what he will say. I don't want to give up running, but I don't want to be in pain anymore, either. Good luck to you!
