The Plantar Fasciitis Community Will Help
I had PF surgery seven weeks ago. They cut a portion of the facia because it was thick, removed a bone spur and did a calf release. I am wondering if anyone else has had problems with their calf muscles making a popping noise with excruciating pain after the surgery. If so, what did you do?

Sharkey on February 1, 2012 at 8:08am One of our frequent posters, Kim, had a torn calf muscle at roughly that phase in her recovery, although she did not half the calf release surgery. She took it easy for a while, and by week 11 post op was on her feet and doing fine. A few months after that and she was 100% recovered and even returned to jogging. Check with your doctor, but that might be what happened to you?
Permalink Reply by Cindy on February 2, 2012 at 11:10am This is the second time my calf muscle has popped in this recovery - first time at 5 weeks, the dr. had me go to tennis shoes at 6 weeks post op and now it popped again at almost 7 weeks postop. Dr. put me in a walking cast again for a week and go back if not better in a week. Did Kim do physical therapy, too?
Thanks for your input.

Can you tell me the background about your calf release surgery. I am curious because that was a suggestion by one of my doctors, that the calf release might be the ultimate solution. I have arch area PF, not so much in the heel. I just under went Blood Platelet injection treatment, as a step before surgery. Another podiatrist suggested I go ahead with the heal release to deal with PF.
Can you tell me more about your symptoms and diagnosis, and what led the doctor to the calf release.
Thanks.
Permalink Reply by Cindy on February 3, 2012 at 11:25am My PF started a year ago this February. I started with night splints and stretches. Then physical therapy and custom-made inserts. The physical therapist told me my calf was tight. I tried taping the foot, too. I had a shot of cortisone. Then in a walking boot for six weeks that I could take off a night to sleep with the night splints on and continued stretching. Then oral steroids with a cast for four- five weeks. Nothing helped. My heel burned and hurt everytime I stepped on it. I also had a large bone spur that pointed straight into the facia (it did not have the normal hook that most do).
My podiatrist finally decided it was time to do the surgery. She wasn't sure if she was going to to the calf-release until she started surgery and my foot had very little movement when she pushed it back towards my leg....so, she removed the bone spur, took out a chunk of the facia and released my calf muscle. I had an incision on the inside of my foot and an incision on the back of my calf. So far, I am happy with the decision...not much for heel pain other than at the incision and the set backs with my calf. It hurts like the dickens when my calf has popped but my Podiatriast has said that I have either tore the sutures or another muscle that starts with a P that serves no purpose. I will see how it is in a week. My problem is being patient. I hope this helps and hope others can post about their calf release experiences.
Thanks.

Thanks for the history and explanation. Good luck with it all, especially the calf, which must be disconcerting.
You answered my question, which is that the calf surgery was used for heel symptom PF, not just for the arch type that I seem to have. I also have been doing a lot to loosen the calf and thigh.
Keep us posted!!
Permalink Reply by Cindy on February 10, 2012 at 9:21pm I am about eight weeks post op. I went to PT yesterday and I have more movement in the surgical foot than my good foot so the calf release made a huge difference. My foot is still sore at the surgical incision. I am doing some strengthening and stretching exercises. Still very hard to go down stairs...one foot at a time. Working on standing on the surgical foot for up to 30 seconds at a time...very hard because of the calf weakness. Also massaging the incision area to break up scar tissue every day. I also ice at the end of the day. For the most part, I am happy that I had the surgery and just need to be patient (not a strong suit). Hope all is going well for everyone.
Permalink Reply by andrew bayliss on March 26, 2012 at 2:57am I have now gotten the advice from two DPMs to consider the "calf release." First more nerve testing. My case is one of arch pain that worsens during the day.
How is the calf release now??
Permalink Reply by Lisa on March 28, 2012 at 2:55pm I had surgery on my left foot last year and never had problems with my calf muscles. I honestly never heard of this before, but it sounds extremely painful. So sorry you have to deal with this.
