Plantar Fasciitis

The Plantar Fasciitis Community Will Help

I had an open partial release done this past Thursday by who seems to be the best doctor for this in central Florida.  The anaesthesiologist, who I met with briefly during pre-op, had even had the same surgery done by my doc, and he had no complaints and said it worked.

The first night is rough, no lying about that.  I'd give it an 8 on the pain scale.  (At ten is when I would sell my wife and kid to make it stop, and I wasn't there yet...)  But I was totally  off the pain meds by Sunday.  The first five days or so he had me in a boot with no weight bearing.  Mild weight bearing, as tolerated and crutch assisted, are okay now, but I remain in the boot.  Crutches should be gone in two or three days.  By next Friday I should be in sneakers.  This guy wants up and moving as soon as possible.  Figures I can be biking and swimming late next week, and running (not sprinting, but jogging..) again in four or five weeks.

Plain and simple, he says in some cases it gets too tight and you need to loosen it.  It works in the vast majority of cases.  I learned about this guy from a fellow athlete at a race when I overheard her talking about PF over two years ago.  She had the surgery and said it was "the best decision I ever made."  I got his name and sat on it until I figured that nothing else was going to work.

Am I anxious that it may not work?  That it will hurt more?  Naturally.  But hopefully it will have been among the best decisions that I have ever made.  I will let you know.  I don't know if posting the names of doctors is approved, but if someone asks in private I will give it.

Thought I was headed that way myself! Then I got medicine for my newly diagnosed Fibromyalgia and the foot went away! Good luck!

This is amazing. Congratulations on coming back from this stuff.  It really gets to you psychologically when you can't do what you use to do.

What kind of shoes are you wearing now -did your Dr. make a recommendation?

Caroline - how long did it take on the medication before your foot issue went away?

So, about 4.5 months out and the foot is quite solid now.  I have been training for summer hiking by using a stair climber, elliptical trainer, treadmiils on steep inclines, as well as 5-7 mile day hikes in my new hiking boots.   Most of these things I have been doing daily in some fashion.  About three weeks ago I felt some residual lateral column pain after a long walk that lasted a few days, but after a long walk (7 miles) this past Sunday I didn't really feel anything the following days.  The incision site is essentially a non-issue, although it sometimes feels a tad tender depending on what I've been doing and for how long.

I'm not running yet.  I wanted to give it six months before running.  Another benchmark for that is to be able to walk ten miles with no lateral column issues the following days, and I am working towards that.  I guess I will start mixed run / walking in June assuming that things progress as I anticipate.

Anyway, just a heads up.  It doesn't hurt to stand or walk anymore.  The recovery is a little rough the first two months, but once I started getting past that I started to realize that this was going to work.  I'm not trying to sell anyone on getting cut, but it worked for me.

Congratulations!!

I too have been doing very well since I got my custom made orthotics about a month ago.  They made all the difference in the world to me.  I'm not back at the gym yet, but that's more of a scheduling issue than anything.

Good to hear.  There are so many bad stories about surgery that I feel some obligation to share a good result.  Most people who have good results with their surgery simply move on with their lives (like Kim, who used to post here..) leaving the few that don't have good results to complain bitterly about it to anyone who will listen.  I don't blame the latter group; everyone wants a sounding board, as well as some support and hope for relief, but I do feel like it is worth giving some voice to a more positive result.  If the surgery crippled that many people, they would not do it.  Can there be bad results and complications?  Yes.  Should you exhaust conservative measures first?  Absolutely.  (Although I would advise against untested miracle cures and expensive snake oil; PRP is borderline on that in my opinion..) but, if you are suffering, take solace in knowing there is something out there that can put a stop to it.

SOrry-just saw the question about the medication. Unfortunately, the end of pain in my non-surgical foot when I started taking Cymbalta did not last. However, most of the pain now in my feet is only once in a while and never the 8-9 it was before my first surgery. Thank goodness!  I still have to be careful with my feet-good shoes, orthotics. When I do get pain now in my feet, the worst it gets is about a 6-and that is very rare. Most of the time, they don't hurt.
