Plantar Fasciitis

The Plantar Fasciitis Community Will Help

So far it's been a breeze, all 6 hours since the surgery. I was taken into a prep roomm before the OR and got an IV and nerve block-and promptly fell asleep until I woke up in the recovery room casted and in no pain, feeling, actually, quite good. I know my foot is numb, but it's the least pain I've had in it since the end of March, lol. That will end later when the nerve block wears off, I'm sure. My foot orthopedist, who is a foot/ankle specialist, had told me prior to the surgery he'd probably be leaving the bone spur alone but after the surgery, he said it was so big, he thought it would be better to remove it. I haven't needed any pain medication yet but that wll probably change in the next 6 hours. I got to the outpatient surgery center a little after 7AM and I was back in my own bed, with my cat Stella (whom we call Nurse STella, since she's been my recovery assistant since my TKR revision in March) purring away and sleeping with me, by 10AM. I'm taking Nucynta for pain (once I need it) which is new to me for pain relief since I've taken other medications after my knee surgeries.

I am hoping this will be bring lasting relief for my right foot. My left foot still has it and unless it improves, will be having the same surgery when I'v recuperated enough from this one. My PF always returns when I've had knee replacement surgeries-all 3 times-and since I'm not planning to need any more of those, hopefully this will be the end of it.

Im so glad to hear everything went well! I didnt have to be in a cast after - just a surgical shoe. How long do you have to have a cast on for? Hopefully this rest period will allow for your other foot to heal to. Well wishes for a speedy recovery!
I have a shoe thing to stick on to walk to the bathroom etcetera and the cast will be on until I get the stitches our a week from Friday. My ortho told me he puts his patients in a cast so they can walk themselves.  Things did go well and am so happy that it did. I've now taken the pain killer. The only spot that hurts is where the small incision by my ankle. The bottom of my feet don't hurt-yea!!!
It's now been 48 hours. I feel really good. After a blip of an issue with the pain killer (Nucynta-which made me hear voices when my eyes were shut-hallucinations are a side effect!), I got switched to Percoset yesterday afternoon but haven't needed to take any since midnight-9.5 hours ago. My foot has very little pain. Feeling good so far.

It's now Thursday 5:30PM. Haven't had a Percoset in 24 hours, only some Tylenol twice. Foot feels better than it did pre-surgically and just hope it remains that way when the cast comes off a week from tomorrow. I've managed to scrape my other leg with the cast. I'm no longer using crutches or a walker to get around the house. However, last night, I had to watch TV downstairs and ended needing to go up and down the stairs on my butt.  Missing showers! I washed my hair in the kitchen sink yesterday and made enough of a mess, my husband, who works at home, told me to let him wash it next time.

An issue today-Decided to shower in the morning so my husband wrapped up my cast with Press N Seal plastic wrap, tape, and a plastic grocery bag, so I showered and felt much better. However!!!!! My foot got wet despite all precautions and I've had a miserable day trying to dry it out, mostly unsuccessfully, despite using a blow dryer several times and other things. I ended up calling my orthopedic office and I have to go there tomorrow (Saturday) when they have something they called Orthoprompt-which is emergency ortho care without the ER wait and cost-to get a new cast. Meanwhile, I'm not in pain (haven't taken any pain killers beyond Tylenol since Wednesday at 5PM) but just very uncomfortable with cold toes and I can feel something rubbing on my ankle or where I think my stitches might be. So of course today I found out late in the day from one of my knee friends who has had ankle surgery that drug stores sell plastic covers for casts so I'm going to get that tomorrow too! FInally getting out of the house, lol, to get that and go to the ortho.. Glad to say, though, that I really have almost no pain in the operated on foot, but my other foot (which also has PF and will be fixed, if necessary, once I'm recuperated from this first foot) has been hurting. But at least I know for next time not to get in the shower with PressN Seal etc. on my cast because it doesn't work well enough!!
New cast in now on my foot-purple:) And we got cast covers for showers at the pharmacy but then found out the ortho office has them too, although the latter ones aren't reusuable as the former are.

Quick update-now Wednesday afternoon. Pain pills are gone. I took one Saturday only because my foot hurt from getting the old cast off (the wet one) and the pretty purple one put on to replace it. I was given a 40 pill supply of Percoset-I took 5 of them total. My foot feels so much better as of now, but I'm still in the protective cast so when reality hits, when the cast comes off Friday afternoon, and I'm back in my walking shoes, I hope that will continue. Already thinking about when to get the other foot done. It isn't as bad (no bone spur-and wasn't the surgical side that caused this last round of PF-knee replaced was right one so right foot got the brunt of the bad gait) but still could use some help.

Here is my pretty purple cast:

THursday evening update-Last night with my cast, thank goodness. Can't wait to get this thing off ! It is rubbing my ankle in an annoying way and my toes are sick of being uncovered unless I put a blanket over them. And I want to take a shower without an audience! However, except for the ankle rubbing and
an occasional twinge (although if I stand and/or walk, that spot hurts a little
more-where the heel spur was removed), my foot feels soooooo much better. I
haven't needed any prescription pain medication since SAturday night-and took it
then because my foot hurt a lot from taking off the wet cast and putting on the
new one. The other foot is hurting at night again, but not at the level the
other foot hurt, but it's still not right. Planning to ask tomorrow how long we
need to wait before he can do the other foot. If I were to put a number on it
(while the cast is still on me), that foot feels 90% better than it, and that's
10 days after surgery.
90% better is great!
Yes it is. JUst hoping it stays that way when the cast comes off in 4 hours!

Cast is off, stitches out. It's quite tender where the stitches came out. He said to expect a little more pain again because the cast provided a lot of protection for the foot in the first days, now gone when the cast comes off. Steristrips have replaced the stitches and I can drive again, although given snow in the forecast for tomorrow, I won't be going anywhere. I have to wait until tomorrow to take a full shower. I"{m supposed to take it easy as far as activity level is concerned for now. Shoes and socks are back on both feet, with orthotics in them (which he made sure were okay). I see him again in 3 weeks and we'll discuss getting the other foot done then. Now at least I can tell my knee ortho, whom I see on Tuesday, some kind of timeline for the feet-as he told me to get the feet fixed and then he'll clean out my knee.
